Legal Serves Department of Lawrence, Kansas
$50,008 Annually
Responsibilities: Provides legal advice and support primarily for City public safety departments: Police Department and Fire/Medical Department. Including assistance in constitutional law (search/seizure), criminal law and procedure, municipal law, open records law, and employment law. Drafts City ordinances, resolutions, administrative policies and other legal documents as appropriate. Negotiates and prepares contracts. Provides legal advice and legal support for other City offices and departments as appropriate. Conducts legal and policy research. Appears in court on behalf of the City.
Qualifications: Requires two years of legal work in municipal government, or an equivalent level of experience with Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school and membership in the bar of the State of Kansas. Preference will be given to candidates with criminal law and procedure and/or law enforcement experience. Must have excellent legal reserach, oral and written sommunication skills. Working knowledge of office procedures and equipment, including MS Office software helpful. The successful candidate must pass a background check and City physical, including drug screen.
Salary Range: $50,008 – $74,237 Annually (Starting pay typically at entry to mid-level of range.)
Benefits: Health, Dental and Life Insurance: Single premium paid by City. Dependent coverage available at a cost of $81.50 bi-weekly. Vacation: 12 days per year (Plus 2 days Personal Leave) Holidays: 9 days per year. Retirement: Kansas Public Employees Retirement System after one continuous year of employment.
